Overview

Following the successful implementation of Germany’s first industrial-scale AI data center in Munich’s Tucherpark, Polarise announces plans to build another AI factory in Bavaria. A data centre, tailored to the requirements of artificial intelligence, is to be built in the Amberg municipality (Unterallgäu) within the greater Augsburg area. It will have an initial capacity of 30 megawatts (MW), which is twice that of the recently completed Polarise project in Munich. Launch is planned for mid-2027, with scalability up to 120 megawatts.

Polarise will acquire the former Wertachtal shortwave transmission building and the adjacent land from the site’s current owners, a consortium consisting of Stadtwerke Bad Vilbel and the local citizens’ foundation. The site will subsequently be converted into an AI-ready data center.

Klaus Minkel, city councillor in Bad Vilbel and representative of the ownership consortium, stated that the necessary resolutions will be submitted to the relevant administrative agencies for approval immediately following municipal elections.

“The planned data center represents both technological innovation and sustainability. It shows that digital progress and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. With this project, we are setting a clear course for the future of our municipality,” says Amberg’s First Mayor, Peter Kneipp.

AI Pod Deployment

As with its data centers in Munich and Oslo, Polarise will deploy its “AI Pods” in Amberg. These are modular units integrated into existing data centers. They operate as independent high-performance computing units within an existing infrastructure. This model enables AI infrastructure to be delivered more quickly, using fewer resources than conventional greenfield construction. In Munich, Polarise completed the project in just six months from concept to commissioning – compared to the typical two to three years needed for the construction of new data centers.

Green Energy Strategy

In addition to swift time to operational readiness, a central focus of the Amberg location will be the strategic use of green energy.

Across a large portion of the site, WV Energie AG (headquartered in Bad Vilbel), an energy developer and site partner, operates solar parks with a total capacity of 70 MWp, as well as battery storage systems intended to cover the data center’s energy requirements.

“The use of renewable energy demonstrates that data centers and the energy transition are not in conflict – quite the opposite. When combined thoughtfully, this project shows how both can actually strengthen each other,” explains Heinrich Bettelhäuser, CEO and Management Board member of WV Energie AG.

The overall energy concept will also include the construction of a photovoltaic park with capacity of up to 35 MWp and a 21 MW wind farm. These facilities will also supply the AI factory with renewable energy in the future. Through these measures, the energy supply can be scaled up to 120 MW of green energy in the coming years, supported by the use of combined heat and power (CHP) plants.

“This project once again reflects our mission of building the AI infrastructure Germany needs to compete globally,” says Michel Boutouil, CEO of Polarise. “It’s a major step forward – and just the beginning.”
